- Hula kahiko: ancient hula before Western people arrived in Hawai'i. Usually, these dances are accompanied by chants (oli) and due to constant volcano eruptions in the area, this was the form that ancient Hawaiians passed their history through generations.
- Hula 'auana: a dance that evolved after the Western influence in the 19th and 20th century. Songs or meles, are played by musical instruments, such as the guitar, ukulele and the double bass.
Tahitian dance
Regarding the Tahitian dance, there are also two types:
- 'Ote'a: characterized by percussion accompaniment. Hip movement usually is fast and strong.
- 'Aparima (apa - voice; rima - hands): the mimics with the hands are crucial and it is similar to hula 'auana.
Besides these principal two dances, there are other Polynesian dancing from Samoa, Rapanui, New Zealand, etc.
